Food Allergies ROCK! Concert

More than 200 rocking guests and families poured into Golden Gate Park in San Francisco on Sunday November 6th to celebrate mom-blog Get Allergy Wise’s first ever food allergy rock concert event. The brain child of mothers Sarah Chuck & Irene Chu, these two were inspired by their children’s food allergies to put together an all-inclusive event and DO SOMETHING. The community heard the call and came out in droves to show support, nibble on allergy-safe goodies from sponsors like Miglet’s Gluten-Free Bakery, and Mariposa Baking Company and rock out to musician Kyle Dine.

BAAAB CEO & award-winning food allergy expert Mireille Schwartz delivered the keynote speech and inspired the families with lots of laughs. KQED reporter Rebecca Wolfson profiled Mireille at the event for the NPR California Report “The Giving State” to air later in the month.

Eight foods, or “The Big 8”, account for 90 percent of all food-allergic reactions in the U.S.: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (e.g., walnuts, almonds, cashews, pistachios, pecans), wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish.

Yet our local schools, restaurants, grocery stores, and other public places still need to support food allergic individuals as we develop an action plan they can LIVE with!

Always carry your up-to-date rescue medication & auto-injector at all times. While these changes seem challenging and overwhelming at first, over time things will get easier. To address the growing problem of food allergies: there is a need for improved diagnostics and therapies, as well as up-to-date training for medical professionals.
